We are currently seeking a Survey Team Leader that is interested in joining our growing company to help lead an established highperforming survey group in our Missoula office. This highly visible role drives day-to-day operations and serves as a primary client-facing leader to advance quality delivery and sustained growth in the region. The candidate must have a thorough understanding of the Design, Engineering, and Survey industry and a strong understanding of the regional and local market. The successful candidate must also have a strong work ethic, a high regard for the survey profession, and excellent technical, analytical, and organizational skills.
Core Responsibilities Operational Leadership & Financial Management
- Oversee statewide survey operations, including staffing plans, budgets, and resource allocation.
- Monitor project performance, utilization, AR, and key KPIs; implement corrective actions to maintain schedule, quality, and profitability.
- Establish annual operating plans in partnership with the survey Group Lead and project managers and track progress against targets.
Client & Business Development
- Act as a key point of contact for existing and prospective clients; ensure responsive communication and long-term relationships.
- Lead and support pursuits: market intelligence, go/no-go, teaming, proposals/RFQs, interviews, and contract negotiations.
- Represent the firm at local industry events and client meetings; proactively identify new opportunities and drive year-over-year revenue growth.
People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team across field crews, technicians, and licensed professionals.
- Set expectations, provide coaching and timely feedback; build a culture centered on safety, technical excellence, collaboration, and engagement.
- Forecast recruiting needs and support hiring, onboarding, and retention initiatives to meet workload demands.
Project Delivery, Compliance & QA/QC
- Champion best practices from kickoff through closeout to meet scope, schedule, budget and quality.
- Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations and internal quality standards; implement QA/QC reviews and audits.
- Continuously improve processes, tools, and templates to enhance accuracy and efficiency across deliverables.
Technical Responsibilities
- Oversee and support boundary, topographic, construction staking, and related survey services; supervise field crews and survey technicians.
- Guide research, analysis, and preparation of maps, legal descriptions, and survey reports; provide expert support as needed.
- Promote effective use of GPS/GNSS, GIS, and modern survey software (e.g., Autodesk Civil 3D, Carlson, Trimble Business Center; MicroStation as applicable).
Qualifications
Required
- Active Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in New Mexico.
- Over 20 years of progressive experience in land surveying, with a proven track record of leading both field and office teams.
- Strong leadership abilities managing team dynamics, overseeing office operations, and coordinating cross-disciplinary project delivery.
- A strong business development mindset, with a proven ability to build relationships and understand market dynamics.
- Proven capability in operations management, financial oversight, and client service.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to lead through influence across disciplines and offices.
- Ensure all work meets local, state, and federal regulations, as well as internal QA standards
- Local-market presence within Montana and knowledge of regional clients and practices.
- Proficiency with current surveying technologies and software (Civil 3D and/or Carlson; Trimble Business Center; GPS/GNSS; GIS).
Preferred
- 20+ years of experience and track record leading a survey team.
- Multi-state PLS/RLS registration.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Knowledge of federal contracting requirements.
