Medical Laboratory Scientist I

Responsible for testing patient specimens, ensuring accuracy of test, and communicating results to providers. Prepare specimens for testing. Test patient specimens, establishing and ensuring acceptable levels of QC are maintained. This requires knowledge of laboratory quality control principles, analytical troubleshooting, instrumentation operation, calibration procedures, and interpretation of quality assurance data to ensure accuracy and reliability of patient test results. Responsible for ensuring requirements of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (as applicable to section/shift) are followed and in compliance. Ensure equipment is operational by performing equipment maintenance, calibrating, and troubleshooting. Possesses substantial subject matter knowledge to utilize correct procedures to accurately identify patients, label specimens and verify that there is adequate sampling for testing ordered. All other duties assigned related to the medical laboratory. Special Skills: Knowledge of clinical lab testing methodologies, diagnostic procedures across disciplines including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, coagulation, immunology, and transfusion services, lab regulations and accreditation standards and compliance requirements, including CAP, AABB, DNV, and FDA. Ability to perform lab quality control, calibration, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance on automated lab instrumentation and analyzers, interpret lab results, recognize abnormal or critical values, communicate findings to appropriate healthcare providers, utilize LIS, electronic MRS, lab computer software to document, verify, and report patient testing results accurately. Proficiency in patient identity procedures, specimen collection verification, processing, maintenance of integrity for testing. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory, Medical Technology or in a related field or the academic equivalent. ASCP Certification or equivalent required.
