General Manager Opportunity – Rural Water Utility
Xenia Rural Water District is seeking an experienced, community-focused leader to serve as our next General Manager. This is an opportunity to lead a respected rural water utility dedicated to providing safe, reliable water service while guiding the organization through future growth, infrastructure investment, and operational excellence.
The General Manager serves as the chief executive officer of the utility and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The successful candidate will oversee daily operations, financial management, strategic planning, regulatory compliance, and customer service while maintaining strong relationships with employees, customers, contractors, and community stakeholders.
We are seeking a leader who combines operational knowledge, sound decision-making, financial stewardship, and a commitment to public service.
Xenia provides water service to all or portions of 11 counties in Central Iowa, located northwest of the Des Moines Metro area. We are a growing utility currently service 11,500 connections, with 2 lime softened water treatment plants that are operated by the District, along with purchase capacity with 4 communities.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in utility management, public works, water operations, local government, or a related field.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Knowledge of water utility operations, budgeting, infrastructure management, and regulatory compliance preferred.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound operational and financial decisions.
Experience working with boards, governing bodies, or public agencies is beneficial.
Relevant certifications or licensing are preferred but not required depending on candidate background.
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training may be considered.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $140,000 – $165,000 annually, DOQ,
