Position Summary
The Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is a key leadership position within Resilience, Emergency Management and Safety (REMS). This position is responsible for managing the university’s environmental health and safety portfolio ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and implementing practices to mitigate safety-related risks. The Director – EHS routinely collaborates with stakeholders to develop a sustainable culture of regulatory compliance, resilience, risk mitigation and safety.
The Director of EHS manages assigned budgets, personnel, programs and resources. This position is responsible for conducting strategic planning, developing programs and services, and advancing the concept of organizational resilience throughout the university. The position is accountable for safety programs and services across the university to include the Klamath Falls, Portland-Metro and Scappoose campuses. This position serves as a standing member on the university’s Radiation Safety Committee and Safety Commission.

Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree and three (3) or more years of relevant professional experience in risk or safety management.
- Demonstrated experience in successfully managing safety-related regulatory compliance and/or safety-risk mitigation functions.
- Ability to effectively multi-task, capable of balancing competing priorities resulting in successful outcomes.
- Sound critical thinking skills, with proven ability to use data to support complex decision-making.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to effectively and respectfully work, communicate and collaborate in diverse, multicultural and inclusive settings.
- Ability to respond to incidents after hours and maintain 24-hour availability via a wireless device capable of voice and data communications.
- Capable of travelling to all university locations to address emerging issues, conduct quarterly safety audits, deliver training, meet with regional facility personnel, perform essential functions and other duties as required.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet all criteria for coverage under the university’s auto insurance program.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree and two (2) or more years of relevant professional experience in risk or safety management.
- Supervisory experience within environmental health and safety or another safety-related role.
- Professional certification in a safety-related specialty.
- Proficiency in the use of databases and computers, including using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, be self-motivated and adaptable to changing institutional needs.
- Ability to prepare professional reports and develop program materials and plans.
