The Firm seeks a Business Development Director (BD Director) in Washington, DC. Reporting to the Senior Director of Business Development and work closely with the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer, the Government Relations Department Chairs, the Office Managing Partner for the Washington, DC office and other members of the Marketing/Business Development team and administrative departments in the firm to develop and execute individual business development plans, client account team programs, department strategic plans, marketing and visibility-raising initiatives and other marketing and business development efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead new business opportunities and pitch strategy; lead pitch prep meetings/calls and make recommendations on service areas to meet client needs.
- Collaborate with competitive intelligence analyst and policy analysts to provide pitch team with research. Work with the Federal GR BD team to create pitch materials and bespoke proposals.
- Collaborate with shareholders and policy directors on key client accounts and business development initiatives in the department strategic plan.
- Coach and train shareholders, policy directors and policy advisors with respect to identifying and pursing new business leads.
- Collaborate with the Business Development team to identify cross-selling opportunities and new service areas for the firm.
- In conjunction with the Department Chairs, take a lead role in the development and implementation of the GR strategic plans and tactics.
- Monitor clients on the “watch list” and work with client team to ensure client stickiness.
- Develop and maintain the business development budget for the Government Relations department.
- Lead lateral shareholder/policy director integration efforts.
- Manage and mentor the Federal GR BD team.
- Develop opportunities to raise the visibility of the Government Relations brand through client events, speaking opportunities, sponsorships and conference and/or trade show attendance.
- Identify opportunities for civic, charitable and community event involvement and sponsorship. Coordinate efforts with the firm’s Director of Pro Bono and Community Impact.
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- 7-10 years of experience in marketing, business development and/or sales in professional services firm or closely related work environment.
- Experience with government relations or regulatory practices strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to coach and train on all aspects of the sales cycle, from identifying and pursuing leads to client retention.
- Sophisticated understanding of highly targeted cross-selling.
- Proven ability to present and communicate clearly including strong writing and editing skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and work with all levels of management and staff.
- Ability to proactively strategize, plan and execute projects seamlessly.
- Self-directed, proactive and a strong attention to detail.
- Some travel required.
- A bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or business is required.
