Position Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate who will have the ability to help build a premier training program and facility in the mid-west. Kansas Municipal Utilities is looking for someone with lineworker and potentially other electric production experience to take what has been built as a great place to learn to new heights in lineworker apprenticeship, sub-station and even powerplant and beyond. KMU has a 30+ acre field and state of the art facility built out for the training, it is time for us to find the right candidate to take it to the future.
The Electric Program Coordinator develops, coordinates and presents workshops and training primarily within the electric programs at Kansas Municipal Utilities for community-owned utilities. The position also assists Kansas Municipal members apprentices progress through Lineworker and other assigned apprenticeships whether sponsored by KMU or individual organizations. Training is delivered through interactive presentation and practical applications on lineworker technical and trade, environmental, health and safety programs.
The position is based in the McPherson, KS area and requires regular travel to assigned city organizations throughout Kansas. Occasional overnight travel required.
KMU is headquartered in McPherson, Kansas, and is the statewide association of municipally owned and operated electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, storm water, and telecommunications utilities across the State of Kansas. As a not-for-profit association established by its member utilities in 1928, KMU is dedicated to serving the needs and interests of these community owned utilities.
Essential Functions:
The individual in this position performs the duties and responsibilities which may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide monthly review sessions with apprentices for both text assignment and/or hands-on work associated with the apprenticeship.
Provide appropriate assessments for apprentices.
Ensure all apprenticeship records are complete, accurate, and up to date, including within the Registered Apprenticeship Partners Information Database System (RAPIDS)
Provide verbal and written updates to support staff regarding apprentice needs, i.e. new books, assessments, enrollments, etc.
Provide administrative support, technical, and other related training for electric lineworker personnel, these include apprentices sponsored by KMU or their utility.
Assess relevant training needs for the employees of municipal utilities.
Research, design, develop, implement, and coordinate the delivery of safety and/or other assigned training courses or programs. These may be site specific safety and technical training sessions according to community need and regulatory compliance requirements.
Coordinate assigned electric lineworker workshops such as Overhead/Underground, Sub-Station and Power Plant as well as various other events at KMU or elsewhere.
Develop and maintain a regular schedule to include delivery of assigned services.
Maintain technical proficiency and knowledge of federal and state safety laws and industry related regulations.
Develop and maintain a good working relationship with city employees, staff, and management.
Plan and develop KMU training field and facility with Director of Energy Services for appropriate modifications needed for future electric training.
Travel including some overnight travel is required to deliver programs and services.
Required Abilities:
Journeyman Lineworker with linework experience and increasing level of responsibility for leading groundmen and apprentices.
Thorough knowledge of safety regulations and standards, including but not limited to OSHA and/or equivalent Electrical Safety requirements.
Experience managing linework projects from concept to completion to include, pole installation and replacement, conductor installation, switching, transformer installation and replacement, underground linework; storm restoration; sub-station construction and operation a plus.
Ability to develop and deliver electric lineworker, sub-station, and related safety and technical training programs.
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral communications, including presentations to groups.
Ability to maintain reliable and sound professional judgment.
Knowledge and use of MS Office products, with a focus on Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with people within various organizational levels.
Daily performance shall include professional appearance and excellent customer service skills
Performs related work as required or assigned.
Daily/weekly/monthly activities:
This position regularly meets and coordinates with the Director of Energy Services to review their schedules and plan upcoming activities on a timely basis. Communicate with KMU staff and management regarding activities planned both on-site and off-site. Communicate with all apprentices’ dates/times for review and hands-on activities. Works with Director of Energy Services to ensure all workshops are appropriately planned, communicated, and promoted. Travel to locations as planned and provide updated reports to support staff for apprenticeship books, etc. needed. Travel to/from locations throughout the state is common and on a planned schedule. Works with Director of Energy Services for planned growth of programs to include new field layout and construction as needed.
