Position Overview

The Control Technician plays a critical role in maintaining and improving production and facility equipment to support the manufacturing of roofing materials. This role ensures safe operations, reliable equipment uptime, and continuous improvement across electrical, instrumentation, automation, and control systems. You'll troubleshoot complex issues, develop corrective actions, and collaborate across teams to keep the plant operating at peak performance.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Compliance & Housekeeping
- Follow all Johns Manville safety and environmental procedures and policies.
- Attend plant safety and training meetings as scheduled.
- Follow Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), use safe work practices, and report hazardous conditions at all times.
- Wear protective clothing and equipment as required.
- Develop JSAs for new tasks and review JSAs annually.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable company, customer, state, and local regulations, including NEC and electrical codes.
- Participate in daily housekeeping efforts; ensure job sites are clean after each job and the maintenance shop is cleaned after every shift.
Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls Work
- Work from electrical and mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and process flow diagrams.
- Perform electrical measurements using voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, DMMs, megohm meters, and related tools.
- Lead testing, calibration, and repair of control equipment.
- Ensure repairs and calibrations meet established standards; develop calibration standards and work procedures.
- Install, set up, and troubleshoot control devices such as weighing systems, metering pumps, thickness monitoring, vacuum systems, magnets, and more.
- Support PID loops, process controls, and automation systems.
PLC, HMI & Automation Support
- Provide PLC troubleshooting support and suggest logic control modifications.
- Perform PLC programming modifications and online troubleshooting.
- Provide PLC programming support for new manufacturing equipment.
- Maintain remote I/O systems and control networks.
- Manage and maintain backup copies of critical PLC programs.
- Support HMI hardware and applications; perform uploads/downloads and suggest improvements.
- Utilize HMIs as troubleshooting tools.
- Provide PLC and HMI training to maintenance personnel and operators as needed.
- Assist with writing HMI tasks into Equipment Operator SOPs.
Leadership, Collaboration & Training
- Demonstrate the ability to train coworkers on plant systems and technologies.
- Act as a technical leader when working with cross‑functional plant teams.
- Display flexibility toward change management and adoption of new tools and methodologies.
- Assist coworkers as directed and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Provide research, development, and implementation support for standardized equipment and best practices across sites.
Leadership Responsibilities
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities for this position; however, this role requires strong leadership skills and the ability to influence, train, and collaborate with employees across all plant departments.
Requirements (Education, Skills, and Abilities)
- Associate's/ Bachelor's degree.
- BS Degree preferred but not required- experience is the key.
- 5+ years of practical electrical/ instrumentation/ controls experience in an industrial setting.
- Hands-on experienced with programming PLCs and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong troubleshooting and Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) skillsets.
- Asset reliability experience.
- Knowledge of advanced computer and SAP software.
- Ability to work with others.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities and projects.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot software programs such as spreadsheets, word processing and database programs.
- Provides feedback and solutions to leadership on critical equipment issues pertaining to safety or operational capabilities.
- After hours support when needed.
- Minimal travel for training and projects
Preferred Technical Skills
Industrial Maintenance
- Advanced mechanical troubleshooting skills on automated and/or semi-automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience in facilities maintenance.
- Proficient knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Knowledge of Lean manufacturing as it relates to root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
Electrical
- Proficient electrical knowledge of 24V480V AC/DC power and control systems.
- Electric motor and Motor Control Center (MCC) knowledge.
- VFDs and PLC systems
- Troubleshooting automated systems, schematics, wiring diagrams, mathematics, and electrical theory.
- National Electrical Code (NEC) in industrial applications.
- Grounding, bonding, and sizing of grounding conductors.
- Power distribution system maintenance and code compliance.
- Use of DMMs for voltage, amperage, milliamp sourcing/sinking, resistance, and megohm testing.
- Understanding and application of NFPA 70E standards.
Instrumentation
- Perform repairs and calibrations in conformance with established standards.
- Develop calibration standards and work procedures.
- Pneumatic controls and interaction with PLCs and automated machinery
- Testing, calibration, and repair of measuring, recording, indicating, and control instruments.
- Experience with pH, conductivity, analytical, flow, temperature (RTD and thermocouple), pressure, level, control valves, smart meters.
- Interpretation of schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and process flow diagrams.
- Pneumatic and hydraulic equipment proficiency.
Controls & PLC
- Research and support standardized control equipment across sites.
- Communicate control system health and improvement opportunities.
- PID loop proficiency.
- Remote I/O and control network maintenance.
- PLC programming modifications and online troubleshooting.
- Identification of various hardware manufacturers and models.
HMI
- Maintain and troubleshoot HMI hardware and applications.
- Perform uploads/downloads.
- Use HMIs as troubleshooting tools.
- Provide HMI training to operators and maintenance technicians.
Networking
- Wired and wireless network support.
- Cabling installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Network switches and wireless access point support.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to safely lift, push, or pull at least 50 pounds, sometimes in awkward positions.
- Repetitive use of hands (grabbing, pulling, sensing).
- Ability to work safely in a fast‑paced, sometimes stressful environment.
- Ability to work in dusty environments with wide temperature ranges (hot to cold).
- Ability to work 12‑ or 8‑hour rotating shifts.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach or work above shoulder level.
